The Cliveden Stud
A VERY WARM WELCOME to The Cliveden Stud, which is situated in beautiful Berkshire countryside and only 25 miles from London. We pride ourselves on our high standards in all aspects of equestrianism.
The Cliveden Stud is one of the most influential studs in racing history. From Buchan who won the Doncaster Cup, Chester Vase and Eclipse Stakes in 1920 to the most famous ? Reference Point ? who won the Derby, King George and St. Leger in 1987. More recent wins include Daggers Drawn who won the Richmond Stakes and Champagne Stakes in 1997, and Endorsement won the 1999 Queen?s Vase. The stud was originally owned and built by Lord Astor, starting in 1908. Over more than a century now, the stud has produced successful horses.
Since its sale in 2006, Tessa Spencer has been Proprietor of a successful Stud and competition Livery yard. The tradition of breeding potentially successful horses has not ended with the move away from racing, and the progeny from the Cliveden Stud continues.
PAST
Tessa Spencer Starting her equestrian career in 1984 Tessa Spencer trained in Germany with Rosemary Springer and in the UK with Alan Doxy & Capt. Jim Fox, who was a gold medalist in the Montreal Olympics. She quickly went on to acquire considerable competitive experience at international level. The highlights of her professional career include Breda and Boekelo in Holland, Boris in Ireland, Burghley in the UK and finally culminating at Badminton Horse Trials in both 1990 and 1991.
PRESENT
Since retiring from competitive eventing herself, Tessa has continued to specialise in the discipline. Many of her students have gone on to compete in major events or to work with highly respected equestrian personalities, whilst she and her team have regularly produced successful competition horses. Tessa has continued to compete in other areas herself including; showing, show jumping and dressage.
Now at the Cliveden Stud students both train towards their exams, and are encouraged to compete to widen their equestrian experience and knowledge. The stud is also breeding a selection of competition horses from the resident stallions, whom it is hoped can go on to be at the top of their game.

We offer a wide range of high quality livery services and expert training for BHS examinations, whether you are looking for an experienced, professional livery yard or fast and effective training, we can help you.
The Cliveden Stud offers an elite livery service, which will keep your horses in the peak of condition and fitness. The Stud offers the finest equine care which is well managed with safe grazing and stabling.
We offer Intensive training courses all year round, plus training days tailored to your personal requirements. Students accepted on the intensive training course can expect hard work and good fun! Tessa?s comprehensive training system throughout the BHS exams upto and including Stage IV and BHSI.
In their time at the stud, students also work through NVQs in horse care. These assess the students on a more day to day basis, and run alongside the BHS syllabi.
Part time courses for BHS exams and NVQs are available all year round.
A registered instructor with the BHS, a BE accredited trainer, with over 20 years experience training and teaching both students and clients, Tessa considers teaching qualifications to be vital. Short courses to overcome specific exam related or schooling problems can also be arranged.
