Careers In Racing

As the governing and regulatory body in Great Britain, the British Horseracing Authority has responsibility for the overall promotion and smooth running of the industry including recruiting, developing and training those who desire a career in horseracing. The website www.careersinracing.com is a great way to find out more about the different careers and training available in this fascinating world of horseracing. There is even a Job Board advertising a whole range of jobs in all kinds of areas.
If you want to work with horses, there has never been a better time to join the horseracing industry. It has a heritage that spans centuries, and is the second largest spectator sport in the country. Racing and Thoroughbred breeding offer a range of exciting and challenging roles. You could be involved with breeding or racing some of the best horses in the country or even the world, or pursue a career in another part of this diverse industry.
There are vocational roles for those who want to work directly with horses. The industry offers some of the best pay and benefits packages across the equestrian world ? a unionised pay structure, overtime, ongoing training and qualifications, insurance and a pension scheme. There are two first class Racing Schools, the British Racing School in Newmarket and the Northern Racing College in Doncaster, offering a number of training courses from apprenticeships to racing secretaries courses. They both have ?Taster Days? each month where you can go along and have a look for yourself at their excellent facilities.
If you?ve decided that you want to work with horses but don't necessarily want to ride, you may want to consider a career in the breeding industry. You?ll get involved with everything from handling foals and mares to mucking out, grooming and exercising in hand. As you become more expert, you?ll also assist with coverings (the technical term for the mating process), be present to help with foalings and attend large horse sales where as many as 2,500 horses may be sold every year, some for hundreds of thousands of pounds. The National Stud in Newmarket offers apprenticeships and a diploma course and can help you get started in the industry.
For those wishing to work in a management capacity there are opportunities at every level. Horseracing offers many such career routes in bookmaking, journalism, catering, racecourse management, to name a few. It even has its own Graduate Development Programme which has been running for over 15 years and offers summer placements to around 18 students each year
